He received his B.A. in Biochemistry and M.S. in Biomedical Sciences at the University of New Mexico. He was awarded the &quot;Genomes to Life&quot; DOE training grant, taking courses at Johns Hopkins University Institute for Multiscale Modeling of Biological Interactions and working with Prof. Mario Amzel on protein folding simulations. He earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics and Structural Biology at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon, working primarily with Profs. Nic Sluis-Cremer and Sanford Leuba studying the structural dynamics of HIV Reverse Transcriptase with single-molecule FRET, fluorescence anisotropy, and molecular simulation. He was a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Mike O\u2019Donnell at Rockefeller University, working with one of the first groups to reconstitute the eukaryotic replisome, also collaborating with Profs. Shixin Liu (Rockefeller) and Antoine van Oijen (Wollongong U.) on single-molecule projects. [br] [br] Grant started his lab in the Biochemistry &amp; Molecular Biology Dept. at CSU Fall of 2019. He currently teaches Physical Biochemistry and Principles of Macromolecular Structure and Function, and is the Faculty Advisor to the Biochemistry Student Association. [br] [br] Grant is a hack musician and was previously in several bands playing synthesizer, drums, or guitar; occasionally, he\u2019ll even try to rope lab members into recording a song together! At the Schauer lab, he studies how DNA damage is bypassed during active replication by specialized DNA polymerases called Translesion Synthesis (TLS) polymerases. He is working to build and test a DNA comber with the Schauer Lab, is also part of the BMES CASE project, and is working to develop UV disinfectant technology for the produce farmers on Colorado&#039;s western slope to help them combat the spread of powdery mildew both in peach and grape crops. In his free time, Kynan plays jazz music, reads, and spends time outdoors. He plays, cello, trumpet, and piano and loves go hiking and fly fishing.
